Primary Children not ready for Secondary School?

NAPE had a meeting with Nick Gibb recently. It was a pleasant occasion and the Minister of State for Education listened courteously as we teachers did our best to educate him in the realities of primary education.

Nowhere was the dissonance between the political and the professional views of learning revealed more clearly than when Mr Gibb in the kindliest way affirmed that “secondary heads receive too many children who are not ready for secondary education” and that “ primaries should get them ready”. Such an old fashioned view is echoed in the White Paper which declaresthat the government will make sure that early years education is as effective as possible ‘so that more children are ready when they start school’ [Para 4.11].

We patiently explained that it is not our job to “get them ready” The children do not have to fit the education system, it’s the other way round and the system, whether Year 1 or Year 7, should fit the individual child whatever that child’s needs might be. Very few contemporary teachers would disagree that this is our professional duty.

It seemed our point was well made because the ministerial response was to change the subject.
