The Indulgence of State

All secretaries of state should expect to have their whims indulged and Mr Gove’s whim is that our children should study the bloody history of British royalty. So he has commissioned Simon Schama, a brilliant television presenter, to write a new history curriculum based on kings and queens. We might ask what has happened to Niall Ferguson who was asked to do the same job only last May. It couldn’t be that Professor Ferguson has developed cold feet about possible damage to his academic reputation, could it ?

Of course, for primary pupils as well as many in secondary school it will come down to stories. Splendid stories with much human interest and much gore but mostly rooted in myth and unproven fancies swollen by the centuries. We will enjoy telling the children that King Alfred was told off by the herdsman’s wife for burning the cakes and that King John lost his luggage while crossing the Wash or even that King Henry V111 had a murderous way with delinquent wives. And the children will lap it up. Yes, we’ll put the stories on a time line pinned to the wall and not at that moment but later, much later, this may just possibly be a help towards understanding how the past lives of ordinary people have evolved to create our lives today.

The BBC has launched a new resouce site based on more than 7,000 video clips from BBC programmes on Learning Zone Class Clips ready to play in your classroom as well as its Bitesize resources and much much more.

The BBC has been committed to learning since its very first schools broadcast in 1924. That commitment is part of its core mission and drives much of its output. Over the years many people have started on a journey of discovery and learning as a result of something they have seen or heard on the BBC - something which has sparked their curiosity, led to a lifelong interest or helped develop a skill.

In September 2010 the BBC announced a new direction for its learning strategy. The underlying ambition is to inspire a life full of learning for everyone by exploiting the educative potential that exists across the full range of the BBC's output and activities, from News to Music, Natural History to the Arts, Sport to Drama.

BESA welcomes first female chairman

British Educational Suppliers Association (BESA) announces the election of a new chairman, Andrea Carr, managing director, Rising Stars UK Ltd.

As an active member of BESA?s council since 2007 Andrea replaces Phil Hemmings, director of corporate affairs at RM plc, who steps down after four years as BESA?s Chairman.

BESA’s council holds the responsibility of governance of the UK’s biggest education trade association as well as supporting the full time staff in the running of the Association. Andrea’s new position involves ensuring that BESA’s members’ views and wishes, in relation to the trade association’s activity, are heard and that the council responds to these in an appropriate way to fulfil BESA’s mission statement of ‘supporting the business of its members’.

Andrea explains; “BESA is extremely fortunate to have a highly active, skilled and committed council whose dedication to the education sector is inspiring. I am honoured to be the first female chairman, and I am looking forward to supporting BESA’s work and BESA’s membership.” Ray Barker, director, BESA adds; “At BESA we have over 300 members from large corporations to very small businesses.

Andrea’s experience of running Rising Stars, an award-winning small to medium sized business, means that she recognises the challenges faced by the majority of our members and is therefore best placed to support them through the changing world of education.”

As the trade association for the educational suppliers industry in the UK, BESA proactively investigates change and new developments within the UK and international education sector and supports its members by interpreting these in relation to their needs.
