13 November 2008 Edu-zone Information and Resource Bulletin - Issue 18 revised

STATEMENT FROM SECRETARY OF STATE FOR CHILDREN, SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES, ED BALLS CONCERNING THE CASE OF BABY P AND HARINGEY LOCAL AUTHORITY -

12/11/08 18:45

Read the full statement from the DCSF

Half Term a distant memory? Is the Credit Crunch making state education more attractive? Something the ISC (Independent Schools Council) Marketing Event at the Russell Hotel, London last week should have addressed but there seemed, apparently, to be too much speaker self promotion and talk of Branding and Brand Development - ugh!

A major injection of cash into the primary network aimed at 1500 or so schools in 133 LAs Hooray!

Also BETT is 25 and has opened its registration site - book early and avoid the queues! Congratulations go to BETT. This is an event not to be missed.

The DCSF notices to the right have been updated. The commitment to apprenticeships and the impending full launch of a student resource Not Going to Uni at Skills London, this month helps highlight that some students don't need the university experience to make their way in industry and commerce.

NotGoingToUni was founded by Tom Mursell. Tom’s just an average 19 year old who found himself under that strange, ubiquitous pressure to go to uni - the same pressure many students might be finding themselves under right now. But Tom wanted out. He knew the situation well, and he could see that he wasn’t being shown all the options available. Tom took a deep breath, stood up slowly, and said ‘No. No, there’s another way. There are options. There are alternatives.’ Tom started NotGoingToUni to share the options and alternatives he’s discovered with the thousands of young people in the same situation. More below.

We have placed some new resources and offers below and links, including the opening information for the BETT Show at Olympia in January 2009, Book early and avoid the registration queues. Don't forget the TES Free Resources Link...You can now also view the latest BBC Education Headlines either on the Edu-zone website or by clicking here
>>

The UK’s biggest careers event for 14 - 19 year olds from creative to healthcare, construction to retail and engineering to hospitality will be at ExCeL London on 20 – 22 November 2008.

Cashless Catering
The key aim of our cashless catering system is to make lunch time more efficient and exciting for the students in your school and to remove the need for them to carry money. Our cashless catering vending does not require a student to carry a swipe card. It is quick and simple to use and the benefits are clear to the students, staff and school. At the point of payment the student places their finger on the fingertip scanner, and once successfully verified by the Catering Point of Sale Operator, their account is debited. There are key fundamental reasons why our cashless catering is a clear winner for both the student and the school:

• It will enable the students to be served more efficiently and quickly and keep queues to a minimum
* It will ensure complete confidentiality for students entitled to free school meals.
* It is a unique verification. No one else can use the student's fingertip.
* It will help to prevent bullying, by ensuring that students no longer need to carry cash to school.
* It will ensure that money provided by parents to pay for schools meals is used only for that purpose which in turn will increase school revenue.
* It will provide parents with the knowledge that their child is eating at lunchtime.
* It will cut down the administrative burden that schools face by reducing the administration department's workload.
* Payment methods include cheques, ParentPay and our in-house designed wall mounted coin and note loader using fingertip verification.

A truly efficient flexible solution, Cashless Catering has been developed to interface directly with SIMS.net and CMIS. VeriCool standalone version can be used with all other MIS systems.

BETT 2009 - leading technology in education for 25 years
BETT has proven itself to be the world's leading technology in education event for the last 25 years and 2009 is set to be a fine celebration of this impressive milestone. Continuing to showcase innovative and revolutionary technology, BETT 2009 runs from 14 - 17 January and enables teachers, leaders, local authorities and decision makers to enhance their knowledge and gain insight into the latest advances in technology.

Every year tens of thousands of visitors pack into London Olympia during the four day event, to view over 700 exhibitors from across the UK and around the world, or to participate in one of the many outstanding seminars. BETT 2009 is sure to attract just as much interest; with a broad range of exciting new products, resources and seminars suitable for all subject areas, it is truly an invaluable resource for anyone in education.

Keith Clifford, marketing manager for Emap Connect, comments: "BETT, like the education sector, is constantly evolving and transforming. Ultimately, BETT aims to support creative teaching and learning by enabling practitioners to touch and test resources, debate ideas and continue their professional development."

A visit to BETT isn't complete without dropping by the innovative feature areas, which enable visitors to understand the practical application of current changes affecting education whilst looking to the future of ICT. 2009 sees the enhanced 'Learning Elsewhere' and 'New Technologies' areas. The first, supported by Prof. Stephen Heppell, will focus on mobile, remote and distance learning, and the second will bring together innovative and inspiring resources, with views from both student and teacher on how these can be implemented in the classroom.

Keith Clifford continues: "Every year, the seminar programme is one of the highlights of BETT, and 2009 is no exception. There is something for everyone, from inspiring best practice tips through to policy advice, and delegates can also earn valuable Continuous Professional Development credits."

The 2009 seminar programme includes over 100 practitioner-led sessions showing the best in innovative and creative teaching practice, keynote speakers, government agency based seminars plus SEN focused topics. These can be pre-booked and demonstrate the practical application of specific educational tools, software and new learning devices. Key Government agencies are available to answer questions from visitors in the 'Policy in Practice' area, whilst specialised information zones offer workshops, demonstrations, and advice.

BETT 2009 takes place 14 - 17 January at London Olympia. It is free to attend and registration will be live from the beginning of September at www.bettshow.com. Visit the website for any further information.
